A Major Issue in Our Community...

Mexican immigrants are encouraged, paid, and sometimes coerced to come to this country by employers seeking cheaper labor. They have been imported as strike breakers and have ended up being targeted by the workers they have replaced. Those who arrive as young children are taught to avoid associations with gangs and drugs and to get a good education if they want to succeed. Yet their undocumented status is held against them making it more difficult to achieve that success (see Chicago Tribune editorial of 3/31/03, “An education in citizenship”).

Addressing Challenges

The problems confronting all immigrants have, for the most part, remained the same over the past several decades. These include lack of access to health care, lack of access to jobs, and lack of access to higher education. Other constraints include the need for a valid driver’s license to get to and from jobs as well as the need for legalization to achieve the American dream that they all seek upon arrival.

PNCC strives everyday to make these hurdles obsolete for immigrants who are asking for nothing.
